Have you ever taken a Crowbar to sheetrock? That’s what I’ve been doing the last two days as I demo parts of my kitchen. Let me just say, don’t try this at home unless you are experienced using a crowbar and doing demo work on a daily basis. I strained my wrist and had to take today off from all of the Reno work, but I’ll be full steam ahead tomorrow.
In the meantime, lots of ice and pinning all of the gorgeous inspo I’m finding over on Pinterest. It’s insanely cool to make my Pinterest boards come to life in my kitchen. Years ago, when I first started using my old Pinterest account, I would lust over people’s home and think, oh, why oh why can’t I have that? Then it dawned on me one day. I can have that and more as long as I’m willing to put mind to it and do the hard work.
Me being the operative word. I cannot tell you how many nights I’ve spent awake watching YouTube tutorials on how to demo a 1940’s ceramic hood and pipe and how to sheetrock a ceiling upside down (which I’m proud to report I successfully did yesterday!) I custom cut and hung sheetrock upside down and drilled it into wood studs by myself. Oh my, was it invigorating. For those that don’t know, hanging sheetrock is hard, let alone hanging it upside down, it’s about ten times harder. I did it and I’m really proud of that fact. I think it’s cool to have fun facts about ourselves like that especially when meeting new people. Like hi, my name is Genevieve and I hung sheetrock upside down by myself.
There is also something really meditative about DIY work. For someone who struggles with anxiety, hammering nails and drilling screws into a wall is so therapeutic. The bonus to demo work is that you can take out your feelings on the wall you are are demolishing. If it’s coming down anyways it may as well have a deeper purpose behind it.
DIY work on our house has also taught me to be more patient. I’ve only been in this for two weeks and already I’ve learned about patience the difficult way. For example, when I tore down the sheetrock around this old hood in my kitchen, I thought it was sheet metal at first, only to discover that it was indeed a ceramic pipe surrounded by sheet metal. Now a ceramic pipe so you might be thinking oh that’s easy, they are similar to clay pots right? No, no they are not. This is an 8-foot long ceramic, clay, 300-pound pipe that would take 5-people on a good day to extract the pipe either through the roof (which is not at all ideal) or through the kitchen (which is also not so ideal, considering we are on a gas line, and you can’t really move gas lines. ) Well you can, but for tons of money that I don’t have. So, I’m stuck with the ceramic pipe. I’ve already named him. His name is Burt and we’ve agreed that Burt stays and that I work around Burt. Burt is apart of the home and he technically was here first so I don’t blame him for wanting to stick around. He’s lived here for decades.
So I’m working around Burt and I’ve come up with a new plan which I’ll save for the actual DIY blog post that will entail all of the details about the hood and my plans for making it a functional, chef’s kitchen on a shoe-string budget.
You know what chef’s need when they decide to demo their kitchens? They need comfort food and so do you. That’s why my delicious easy, slow cooker Beef and Vegetable Stew is going to be a staple in your recipe arsenal for years to come. I’ve spent years perfecting this classic recipe and I’m excited to report I’ve got the stew down to a science. It’s all about the cornstarch. Cornstarch makes all the difference. I actually take credit for the cornstarch addition. My friend gave me the suggestion and she was right. Cornstarch is everything when perfecting Beef and Vegetable stew.

Easy Slow Cooker Beef And Vegetable Stew

Easy Slow Cooker Beef and Vegetable Stew is a serious comfort food any day of the week. It’s chock full of flavor, full of protein, healthy starches, and tons of veggies. Pair this delicious stew with some bread and butter, and you’ve got a warm meal for a chilly night.
- 1-2 pounds of cubed beef stew meat
- 1/4-cup of flour
- 1-teaspoon flakey sea-salt
- 2-teaspoons black pepper
- 1-teaspoon seasoning salt
- 1-teaspoon paprika
- 1-tablespoon cornstarch
- 2-cloves garlic, minced
- 1-bay leaf
- 1-tablespoon, Worcestershire Sauce
- 1-red onion, chopped
- 2-cups carrots, chopped
- 2-cups potatoes, diced
- 2-cups celery, chopped
- 2-cups beef bone broth
- Fresh parsley and more chunky sea-salt for garnish
- Place the stew meat in a medium mixing bowl and combine with the flour, sea-salt, black pepper, seasoning salt, and paprika.
- Place the prepped stew meat in the slow cooker.
- Pour the beef broth over the stew meat in the slow cooker.
- Next, add the chopped onion, carrots, celery, chopped garlic, and the potatoes to the slow cooker and combine everything together. Add in the cornstarch and combine again. The cornstarch acts as a thickening agent.
- Add the Bay Leaf to the top of the strew. You’ll remove the Bay Leaf from the stew once it’s all cooked.
- Cover, and cook on the medium setting for 6-8 hours, depending on your slow cooker settings.
- Add stew to bowls and garnish with more sea-salt and fresh parsley. Pair the stew with a side of toasted buttered French bread.
