Ingredients for Strawberry Cream Cheese Danish

What Makes This Strawberry Danish So Delicious
- Puff Pastry: (store-bought) creates those beautiful flaky, buttery layers that make these danish hearts taste like they come straight from a bakery. It keeps the recipe simple while still delivering a light, crisp texture that contrasts perfectly with the creamy filling.
- Fresh strawberries: bring natural sweetness, juiciness, and that classic bright strawberry flavor that makes this danish feel fresh and fruity instead of heavy.
- Cream cheese: forms the rich, creamy base of the filling. It adds a slight tang that balances the sweetness and gives the danish that classic bakery-style cheesecake-like center.
- Granulated Sugar: sweetens the cream cheese mixture and enhances the natural flavor of the strawberries, creating that dessert-style balance without being overly sweet.
- Orange Zest: adds a gentle citrus brightness that lifts the flavor of both the strawberries and cream cheese. It keeps the filling from tasting flat and adds a fresh, bakery-style depth.
- Vanilla Extract: deepens the overall flavor and adds warmth, making the cream cheese filling taste smoother and more rounded.
- Egg Wash: helps the puff pastry bake up golden, glossy, and beautifully crisp, giving these danishes their irresistible bakery finish.
Equipment Used for Easy Heart Shaped Pastry
- Baking Sheet: baking sheet provides even heat so the puff pastry rises properly and turns golden and crisp.
- Heart-Shaped Cookie Cutters: creates the festive heart shape that makes these danishes perfect for Valentine’s Day, brunch, or special occasions.

How to make Heart Shaped Strawberry Cream Cheese Danish
Prep Step: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

- Step 1: Make the filling. In a bowl, mix softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and orange zest until smooth and creamy.

- Step 2: Prepare the strawberries. Wash, hull, and dice the fresh strawberries into small pieces.

- Step 3: Roll out the puff pastry. Lightly flour your surface and gently unfold or roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet.

- Step 4: Cut heart shapes. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut hearts from the puff pastry. Next, create the center well. Use a smaller heart-shaped cutter to gently press (not cut all the way through) into the center of each pastry heart, creating a shallow divot while leaving a border around the edges.

- Step 5: Add the filling. Spoon the cream cheese mixture into the center of each pastry, staying within the pressed border.

- Step 6: Top with strawberries. Add diced strawberries on top of the cream cheese filling.

Step 7: Apply egg wash. In a small bowl, whisk an egg with a splash of water. Lightly brush the exposed puff pastry edges with the egg wash.

Step 8: Bake. Place pastries on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15–18 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffed around the filling. Enjoy with a hot cup of coffee! Yummy!
Top Tip for Strawberry Cream Puff Pastry
- Don’t overfill the centers! Too much cream cheese filling can spill over while baking. Use about 1 tablespoon per danish so the pastry puffs up beautifully around the edges.
- Keep your puff pastry cold. Cold pastry = flaky layers. If it gets soft while working, pop it back in the fridge for 10 minutes before baking.

Fresh strawberries work best. Frozen berries release too much moisture as they bake, which can make the pastry soggy instead of crisp.
Yes. You can prepare the cream cheese filling a day in advance and store it in the fridge. You can also cut the puff pastry hearts ahead, but assemble and bake just before serving for the flakiest texture.
Yes. Because of the cream cheese filling, store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or air fryer for a few minutes to bring back crispness.

Pro Tip for the best Danishes!
- Don’t skip the egg wash. Brushing the pastry edges with egg wash gives the danishes their golden color, glossy finish, and helps create that crisp, bakery-style crust

Homemade Strawberry Cream Cheese Danish Hearts Recipe
Equipment
Ingredients
- 1 package Store-bought Puff Pastry
- 4 oz Block of Cream Cheese (softened)
- 3 tablespoon Granulated Sugar
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- 3 teaspoon Orange Zest
- 1 Pound Fresh strawberries, diced and hulled
- 1 large Egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat + prep pan. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Make the cream cheese filling: In a mixing bowl or stand mixer, mix together the cream cheese, sugar, vanilla extract, half of the orange zest until creamy and smooth.
- Prep the strawberries: Wash and hull strawberries, then dice them into small pieces.
- Cut the puff pastry hearts: Lightly flour your surface if needed. Unfold the puff pastry and use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out hearts. (Re-roll scraps gently if needed — just don’t overwork it.)
- Create the “divot”: With a smaller heart cutter, press a heart shape into the center of each pastry heart without cutting all the way through—you’re making an outline/indentation so the center stays lower and the edges puff
- Add filling: Spoon a small dollop of the cream cheese mixture into the indented center and spread slightly, staying inside the outline
- Top with strawberries: Add a few pieces of diced strawberry on top of the filling (enough to look cute, not overloaded).
- Egg wash for golden edges: Brush the exposed puff pastry edges with beaten egg (avoid brushing the filling)
- Bake at 400°F for 12–16 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and deep golden brown.
- Serve warm and enjoy with a hot cup of coffee
