🌿 How to Build a Wooden Trellis Step-by-Step

This simple wooden trellis is built using 1x3 common wood and a hog wire panel. You can adjust the size depending on your garden bed, but this is the exact method I used.
1x3 wood boards and hog wire panel arranged for building a wooden garden trellis frame
    1. Step 1: Measure and Cut Your Materials
Start by deciding the size of your trellis based on your garden bed. My finished trellis frame measures approximately 2.5 feet wide by 5 feet tall, with longer legs so it can be secured into the soil.
    2. Cut your 1x3 wood pieces to size. You’ll need enough pieces to build a full rectangular frame with extended legs (I used 8 pieces total).

    1. Step 2: Flatten and Cut the Hog Wire Lay your hog wire panel flat on the ground and use bricks or heavy objects to hold it in place and flatten it out. Once it’s flat, cut the hog wire to match the size of your frame.

    1. Step 3: Build the Frame Around the Wire Lay out your wood pieces and position the hog wire inside the frame. Assemble the frame by screwing the wood pieces together, sandwiching the hog wire inside as you go. This helps hold everything in place and keeps the panel aligned.

    1. Step 4: Secure the Wire Once the frame is assembled, use a staple gun or electric screw gun to attach any remaining loose edges of the hog wire to the wood frame. Add staples along the sides to make sure the wire is tight and secure.

    1. Step 5: Install the Wooden Trellis Place your trellis into your garden bed and push the extended legs into the soil. Use stakes if needed to stabilize the trellis and keep it upright, especially as your plants begin to grow and climb.
What is the best wood for a Garden Trellis?

Cedar or untreated wood works well for a wooden trellis since it holds up outdoors and is safe for garden use.

What plants grow best on a Trellis?

Climbing plants like beans, peas, cucumbers, and some flowers all benefit from a sturdy garden trellis.

Do I need to secure the trellis in the ground?

Yes, using stakes or pushing the legs firmly into the soil will help keep your trellis stable as plants grow.
