If there is on fruit that screams summer, it's peaches. Every summer, I look forward to making this Fresh Homemade Peach Jam Recipe (No Pectin) with peaches from the tree in my backyard. I plant this peach tree when we first move into our home 18 years ago, so every harvest feels a little extra special. This year is one of my best peach seasons yet because the tree doesn’t develop peach leaf curl, and it rewards me with beautiful, juicy peaches that are perfect for making homemade jam.

🍑 Ingredients for the Best Homemade Peach Jam

Making the best homemade peach jam starts with just a few simple, high-quality ingredients. Fresh, ripe peaches are the star of the show. Honey, sugar, and fresh lemon juice help create a beautifully balanced old-fashioned peach jam without the need for powdered pectin.

    • 🍑 Fresh Peaches: Sweet, juicy fresh peaches are the heart of this recipe. I recommend using ripe peaches that are fragrant and slightly soft to the touch. Keeping the skins on adds beautiful color, extra flavor, and helps give this homemade peach jam its rustic, old-fashioned texture.
    • 🍋 Fresh Lemon Juice: Fresh lemon juice brightens the flavor while adding the acidity needed to balance the sweetness. It also helps the jam thicken naturally as it cooks, making homemade peach jam without pectin simple and delicious.
    • 🍯 Honey:A drizzle of honey adds a rich, floral sweetness that complements the peaches without overpowering them. It gives the finished jam a deeper flavor while keeping the fresh peach taste front and center.
    • 🍬 Granulated Sugar: enhances the natural sweetness of the peaches while helping preserve the jam and create that classic spreadable consistency everyone loves.

Equipment for Old Fashioned Peach Jam with Skins

You only need a few basic kitchen tools to make this old-fashioned peach jam with skins. These kitchen essentials make preparing, mashing, and cooking the peaches simple and stress-free.

    • 🥣 Medium Saucepan – A heavy-bottomed saucepan helps the peaches cook evenly while reducing into a thick, flavorful jam without scorching.
    • 🥄 Wooden Spoon or Silicone Spatula – Perfect for stirring the jam frequently as it cooks and preventing it from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
    • 🥔 Potato Masher – Mash the softened peaches to your desired consistency while still leaving plenty of delicious peach pieces throughout the jam.
    • 🫙 Glass Jars with Lids – Store your finished peach jam in airtight jars in the refrigerator or prepare clean canning jars if you plan to preserve it using a water bath canner.

🍑 How to Make Old-Fashioned Peach Jam Without Pectin

Fresh peaches being washed in a kitchen sink before making peach jam.
    1. Step 1: Wash and Prepare the Peaches: Wash the fresh peaches thoroughly under cool running water to remove any dirt or debris. Since this recipe uses the peach skins, there’s no need to peel them. Dice the peaches into small, bite-sized pieces and transfer them to a medium saucepan.
Chopped fresh peaches, honey, sugar, and lemon juice measured beside a saucepan before making peach jam.
    1. Step 2: Combine the Ingredients: Add the granulated sugar, honey, and fresh lemon juice to the saucepan with the diced peaches. Stir until everything is evenly combined and the peaches are coated in the sugar mixture.
Peaches gently simmering in a saucepan as the fruit softens and releases its juices for peach jam.
    1. Step 3: Bring the Jam to a Boil Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir occasionally as the peaches begin releasing their natural juices. Bring the mixture to a full rolling boil before reducing the heat to maintain a steady simmer.

    1. Step 4: Mash the Peaches Once the peaches have softened, use a potato masher to mash the fruit to your desired consistency. Leave a few larger peach pieces for a chunkier, rustic jam or mash more thoroughly for a smoother spread.

    1. Step 5: Simmer Until Thickened Continue simmering the jam for 45–60 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it has reduced and thickened into a rich, glossy consistency. Because this recipe is made without pectin, patience is key as the peaches naturally cook down into jam

    1. Step 6: Test for Doneness Dip a wooden spoon into the jam and run your finger through the back of the spoon. If the jam leaves a clean line and doesn’t immediately run back together, it’s ready. If it’s still too thin, continue simmering for a few more minutes before testing again.

    Step 7: Cool and Store

Remove the jam from the heat and carefully spoon it into clean glass jars. Let it cool completely before sealing the jars and storing them in the refrigerator. Enjoy your homemade peach jam on toast, biscuits, English muffins, yogurt, ice cream, or your favorite breakfast treats.

🍑 How to Tell When Your Peach Jam Is Ready

Not sure if your jam has thickened enough? Try the freezer spoon test!

    • Place a clean metal spoon in the freezer for 5–10 minutes. Once your peach jam has been simmering, spoon a small amount onto the chilled spoon and let it sit for about 30 seconds.
    • Run your finger through the center of the jam. If it leaves a clean line that doesn’t immediately run back together, your jam is ready. If it’s still thin and runny, continue simmering for another 5–10 minutes before testing again.

💡 Pro Tip: Remember that homemade peach jam will continue to thicken as it cools, so don’t overcook it trying to make it extra thick in the pot.

How do you make homemade peach jam without pectin?

Making homemade peach jam without pectin is easier than you might think! Fresh peaches naturally contain pectin, so when they’re cooked with granulated sugar, honey, and fresh lemon juice, the mixture thickens as moisture evaporates. Simply bring everything to a full rolling boil, stir occasionally, mash the peaches to your desired consistency, and continue cooking until the jam reaches the perfect thickness.

How do you thicken homemade peach jam?

The easiest way to thicken peach jam is simply to let it cook a little longer. As the fresh peaches release moisture, the liquid naturally reduces and creates a thick, flavorful jam without powdered pectin. If your jam still seems thin, continue simmering until it coats the back of a spoon. You can also use the chilled spoon or plate test to check for doneness before removing it from the heat.

How long is peach jam good for in the refrigerator?

If your easy peach jam has not been canned, store it in an airtight jar in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 weeks. Always use a clean spoon when serving to help extend its freshness. If you notice mold, an off smell, or signs of spoilage, discard the jam.

How do you can peach jam?

To preserve your peach jam for longer storage, ladle the hot jam into sterilized canning jars, leaving about ¼ inch of headspace. Wipe the rims clean, apply the lids and bands, then process the jars in a boiling water bath using a water bath canner, following safe canning guidelines for your altitude. Once properly sealed, the jars can be stored in a cool, dark place until you’re ready to enjoy them.

Does peach jam need to be refrigerated?

Yes. If your peach jam has not been processed in a water bath canner, it should be refrigerated once it has cooled completely. Properly canned and sealed jars may be stored at room temperature until opened. After opening, refrigerate any remaining jam.

    • 1 saucepan
    • 1 Wooden Spoon
    • 1 Potato Masher
    • Jam Jars with lids

    Ingredients

    • 12-14 medium fresh peaches, washed, pitted, and diced (skins left on)

    InstacartGet Recipe Ingredients

    Instructions

    • Prepare the peaches. Wash the fresh peaches thoroughly, remove the pits, and dice them into bite-sized pieces, leaving the skins on.
    • Combine the ingredients. Add the diced peaches, granulated sugar, honey, and fresh lemon juice to a large saucepan. Stir well until everything is evenly coated.
    • Bring to a boil. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir frequently until the sugar dissolves. Increase the heat and bring the mixture to a full rolling boil.
    • Mash the peaches. Once the peaches begin to soften, use a potato masher to gently mash about half of the fruit, leaving plenty of larger chunks for texture.
    • Simmer until thickened. Reduce the heat to low and cook for about 60 minutes, stirring often to prevent sticking, until the peach jam thickens to your desired consistency.
    • Test the jam. Spoon a small amount onto a chilled plate or spoon that has been in the freezer for several minutes. Let it sit for 30–60 seconds. If the jam wrinkles slightly when pushed with your finger and doesn’t immediately run, it’s ready.
    • Cool and store. Remove from the heat and allow the jam to cool slightly before transferring it to clean jars. Refrigerate after cooling completely.
