Why you'll love this Southern Tomato Pie recipe!
Old-fashioned tomato pie simple recipe is a savory pie recipe that makes the perfect dinner and wonderful leftovers. It also freezes well! This Southern comfort food dish will be on you make again and again using up those fresh tomatoes!
Ingredients for Fresh Tomato Pie

Ultimate Summer Tomato Pie Recipe
- Pie crust: Use a store-bought pastry crust or make your own at home and if you are making your own then more power to you!
- Tomatoes: You’ll need four large (sliced) tomatoes. You can peel the tomatoes if you want, but I didn't find it necessary for this dish. I use fresh Heirloom tomatoes from my garden and my favorites for this dish are Lemon Boy Tomatoes, Abraham Lincoln Tomatoes, Beefsteak Tomatoes, and Amana Tomatoes, and the Porkchop Heirloom tomatoes. Basically, the beefier and meatier the tomatoes, the better. Think thick tomatoes here. 🙂
- Bacon: Cooked, drained, and chopped bacon makes this dish so good. You could also do lean ground beef or ground turkey for a protein packed twist!
- Green onions/Chives: Green onions add a bright pop of flavor and color and so do chives. I love to add both of these fresh seasonings to this dish!
- Seasonings: Season the tomato pie with fresh basil, dried oregano, garlic powder, and crushed red pepper which is optional. I leave out the crushed red pepper as I feel it takes away from the true flavors of sweet tomato pie.
- Cheese: Shredded Sharp Cheddar cheese sends this fresh tomato pie recipe over the top. It needs to be Sharp Cheddar cheese too. Trust me, it makes all the difference!
- Mayonnaise: Mayonnaise gives the tomato pie creaminess and adds tangy flavor, plus who doesn't love Mayonnaise. Use Best Foods Mayo or Hellman's if you're on the East Coast.

What types of Tomatoes work best for Easy Tomato Pie?

How to make a Tomato Pie

- Step 1: Preheat oven to 375-degrees Fahrenheit. Blind bake the store bought pie crust for 10-15 minutes until pie crust is golden brown. This ensures the pie won't come out soggy. See instructions below for how to blind bake pie crust.

- Step 2: Slice your tomatoes and lay them out on a baking sheet and cover them in salt. This is going to remove excess moisture from the tomatoes ensuring the tomato pie doesn't come out soggy. Let those rest for five minutes and while they are resting, cook the bacon.

- Step 3: Chop the bacon into squares and cook according to package directions. Once cooked, set aside. First add a layer of cheese to the prepared pie crust.

- Step 4: Now it's time to assemble the rest of our tomato and cheese pie. In alternating layers, fill pie crust with tomatoes, bacon, green onions, chives, and fresh basil. Top with garlic powder, and fresh black pepper.

- Step 5: Stir together cheese and mayonnaise in a small bowl. Spread the shredded cheese mayo combo over the top of pie and over loosely with aluminum foil.

- Step 6: Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Remove foil and continue baking for 30 more minutes. Serve warm with sour cream and more fresh basil for garnish. Enjoy!

Top Tip to keep your Pie Crust from getting soggy
- Blind-baking a pie crust is easy peasy! bake for 10-15 minutes at 375°F. Simply add dried beans to the inside of the pie crust to keep is from puffing up during baking. Bake until the edges are set and light golden, then remove the weights (the dried beans) and set aside until ready to bake the remainder of your tomato pie. Brush the pie crust with egg whites before blind baking it! This will ensure a golden brown, delicious flaky pie crust!

How to store Southern Tomato Pie Recipe
- One of the things I love about classic southern tomato pie is that it freezes well! Simply store extra slices in a sealed glass Tupperware and freeze. Reheat on a baking sheet at 350-degrees for 15-minute when ready to eat!
