What you need for Super Easy Cherry Turnovers
- All-purpose flour
- Thawed Puff Pastry dough ( we like the Trader Joe's brand or the Pepperidge Farm puff pastry brand ) Store-bought puff pastry is the way to go!
- Pitted Cherries or frozen cherries
- Coconut sugar or brown sugar
- Vanilla Extract
- Honey
- Cinnamon
- Lemon Juice
- Arrowroot powder or cornstarch
- Melted Butter or eggwash
- Baking Sheet
- Parchment Paper
- Cherry Pitter

🍒 How to Make Cherry Turnovers Step-by-Step Photos
Prep Step: Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit
- Step 1: Combine the pitted cherries, coconut sugar, honey, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and lemon juice in a mixing bowl.
- Step 2: Transfer the cherry mixture to a saucepan and simmer the cherry mixture over medium heat. Mix in the cornstarch and continue to simmer the cherries over medium heat for 3 more minutes and then simmer on low heat for 5 minutes.
- Step 3: The cherries will start to thicken and form a compote mixture. Remove from heat and let cool. Set Aside.
- Step 4: On a lightly floured surface, using a rolling pin, roll out each sheet of puff pastry dough. Cut the puff pastry into 8 rectangles using a dough or pizza cutter. You can also cut them into equal squares.
- Step 5: Using a spoon, mound the tablespoons of the cherry filling into the center of each square, leaving a ½-inch border.
- Step 6: Fold one side of the pastry over the cherry mixture, and press the edges firmly to seal. Crimp the edges with a fork. Transfer the prepared cherry turnovers to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush tops with egg wash
Step 7: Bake the cherry pie turnovers at 375 degrees for 30-40 minutes, until turnovers are golden brown and puffed, and the juicy cherry filling is bubbling. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Options For Flaky Cherry Turnovers
- If you are gluten-free you can use almond flour or coconut flour for this recipe. Keep in mind though, using almond flour will make the cherry turnovers a bit more on the grainy side.
- You can swap fresh cherries and use frozen cherries instead and make cherry turnovers with frozen cherries.
- Bing cherries, Chelan cherries, Mount Rainer all make wonderful fresh cherry options for this recipe. You can also use Lampins, Tulane, and Lambert cherries for this recipe. Or do a combo which is my favorite!
- Want your cherry turnovers even sweeter? You can make a vanilla glaze using powdered sugar and almond extract. Or top easy puff pastry cherry turnovers with homemade whipped cream made using heavy whipping cream. This makes it an epic sweet treat!

Easy Homemade Cherry Turnovers with Puff Pastry
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoon flour this will be used for your work surface
- 1 box storebought-puff pastry sheets
- 12 ounces fresh, pitted cherries Use a cherry pitter to pit the cherries!
- 1 cup coconut sugar
- ¼ cup honey
- 2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 2 teaspoon Vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch or arrowroot powder
- 2 tablespoon melted butter or eggwash This will be used for brushig the outside of the pastry before it goes into the oven.
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the pitted cherries, coconut sugar, honey, cinnamon, lemon juice, and vanilla extract.
- On a lightly floured surface, using a rolling pin, roll out each sheet of puff pastry dough.
- Cut the puff pastry into 8 rectangles, using a pizza dough cutter.
- On the prepapred parchment lined baking sheet, spoon two tablespoons of the cherry mixutre onto the middle of each rectangle, leaving a ½-inch border.
- Fold one side of the pastry over the cherry mixture, and press edges firmly to seal. Crimp the edges with a fork. Lightly brush the edges of the pastry with melted butter or egg wash.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes until turnovers are golden and puffed, and filling is bubbling. Serve warm or at room temperature.
